Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
